Smash defence

Smash defence choices: block, drive, or lift

Smash defence is not just getting the shuttle back. Choose block, drive, or lift based on opponent shape, speed, and partner position.

Smash defence is often misunderstood as simply reacting faster. In training, the more important lesson is that every defensive return should set up the next shot.

The common choices fall into three groups:

  • Block to the net: use it when the rear-court attacker’s weight remains back and there is a clear opening at the front.
  • Drive: use it when the height and speed of the incoming shuttle allow a flat reply and your partner is ready to follow up.
  • Lift to the rear court: use it when you are under heavy pressure, off balance, or need time to reset your formation.

Start with fixed patterns, progress to choosing between two options, and finally add a decision based on the opponent’s position.
